RANCH NEWS
¡Saludos! We hope all is well for your families, wherever you
may be. Hogar has been plugging right along with new projects and energy during
this new school year, always trying to have a good balance of school, fun, and
farm life. Our eleven new kids this year are settled in and adjusting well to
being here, kids are working hard at school and all the projects we have
going. We have had great success with our extracurricular English classes that
two young men from Germany have started here as part of a community service
volunteer program. Both younger and older students are reaping the
benefits of
learning a new language, and volunteer Michelle Morman is helping with
one-one-one tutoring, as well.
We had a bit of excitement the other day when Hogar was invited to spend the afternoon on a private local ranch with Mexico’s president, Felipe Calderón. Here is a brief description from Michelle of the exciting event: “The President and the Governor of Chiapas had a grand entrance as they arrived in a small fleet of helicopters that landed on the ranch’s property. He walked in by means of a gated aisle by luck I happened to be standing next to this gate before the crowed massed around the gate to get closer to see the President. As he came down the aisle he shook hands and accepted folders and other written documents of the audience members. He approached our section and passed us facing people on the other side of the aisle. Just when I thought he was going to pass us by he walked back to the children and begun to greet them. As he approached I prepared myself to shake his hand and he looked at me and mumbled something along the lines of “Hola guerita” which means “Hello white girl” a common and non-offensive name for someone of light skin. He shook my hand and pulled it towards his chest and leaned in for the customary air cheek kiss. I was taken a bit off guard but acted like it was totally natural until he walked away and I looked at the older girls with my jaw dropping smile and they all burst out in laughter. It was a delight to have attended this event and has become a big joke around here as everyone reminds me that I kissed Mexico’s President.” It was a fun, exciting day for all.
We also had our corn harvest last month and made tamales from scratch to celebrate. Here is one of our newest boys proudly helping out in the process. Each child and young adult had his or her job, and those tamales sure tasted good! We wish all of you much joy and good health, and we thank you for being a part of Hogar’s family.
